In March 1978, he was admitted to the Department of Mathematics of Central China Normal University. In January 1982, he graduated with a bachelor degree in Science and worked in the university. In September 1985, he was admitted to the postgraduate class of the Department of Sociology of Peking University and graduated in July 1987. At the same time, he was admitted to the Department of Sociology of Peking University. He graduated in June 1990 and received a doctor's degree of law. He was rated as a lecturer in June 1987 and promoted to a professor in January 1993. In October 1993, he was awarded the "special government allowance" by The State Council. In 1997, he was awarded as the "Cross-century Academic Leader of Hubei Province" and In 2012, he was awarded as the Distinguished Professor of Nanjing University.
